Straighterline A&P

Forums:

Has anyone taken either Straighterline A&P I or II, with or without lab? I am looking to sign up within the next week or so and am wondering if I need the book they "suggest", or can I get away with a good reference book? I have 2 A&P books as well as a companion lab book, and Vangonotes for A&P, none of which is the recommended book.

As always, any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I thought about it, but I ended up just doing the EC exam, but a few students here have done the course so you should be able to get some good advice. I think it's alot cheaper than EC so that's a plus :-)

Thanks beachnurse, that's one if the reasons why am considering straighterline. The other is that I'm just a plain ole CHICKEN, and am soo scared to take the excelsior exam due to the enormous amount of content (for A&P that is).

I took A&P II without the lab through Straighterline. It wasn't too bad but I recommend you buy the book they say you need.
I personally used my A&P book from my CC A&P I course and there were some difference's between it and the exams.

Hmmm, thanks KelLpn, you would thing the information is all concrete and SHOULD be the same whether I use their recommended book or not. I guess I will have to break down and purchase that expensive book, UGH!

I would have thought that too, but their exams had some info that I could not find in my book at all.
Those A&P books are so expensive..

Try renting the textbook instead of buying the edition they want, much cheaper and motivation to get it done. I rented for Communications, Macro, Chem & Bio thru Straighterline. I rented from the place that has EGG in its name.

I just finished A&P 1 with lab through Straighterline only using my Cliffs Quick Review book and a book called "Body Structures & Functions," and got an 89% percent. Not bad. Good luck!

I have seen quite a few discounted books on half.com, so that's the way I'm leaning.
Did you do A&P1 AND 2 at the same time?

yes.. and Im almost done.. I have all the test completed in AP-1 and all but 2 in AP-2.. I just need to complete a few labs and I am done.. I started in May. and I have powered through.. it is really fast way to get AP-1 and 2 done.. I took the lab with AP-1 as I wanted the 4 credits for a BSN.. all the question come right out of the book. I am so glad I went this way.. I should be done in a week. or so.
ROB

Romstead, have you finished this course and does excelsior accept it as a letter grade or pass/fail? Do you have to have preapproval from excelsior before taking the class? Thanks!

YES YOU must get a ok from Excelsior. I did through my advisor.. then I signed up for the 99.00 a month.. I started in May. I am done will all the online testing for AP-1 and just have a few labs to do. and have only the Final for AP-2.. and yes Excelsior will only give you a P/F.. .. I took the lab so I could use it for my BSN should I decided to got that route.. it has bee a great class .. challenging at times. but a very can do..

Rob

Romstead, appreciate the info. I am not yet enrolled but at the applied, prelim. Evaluation stage. Do you have to be enrolled, you think, to receive approval?

No do not ... I think they will accept it.. but.... I would talk to someone at EC.. to get the offical word,, but Im thinking unless things have changed.. they will accept it.
rob

Appreciate that, I'll get in touch with them.

Just finished Straighterline A&P one with lab and A&P two with out lab.. I started on May 5th and completed on July 21.. not bad for a course that takes two semesters in a brick and motor college.. if you want any tips or info let me know. It was not a cake walk. but very doable..
Rob

I really rec. using the book that is listed for the class as all the test question can be found word for word in it..

Romstead, congrats How close are you to the cpne? As for me I'm still undecided. I got your PM and will contact you if I go down this road.

Just completed My A&P requirement for EC. Nursing Program through Straighterline.... I did not need to take the lab but I thought having it might help if I decide to go for BSN or B,S. The corse was not a cake walk but doable. IF you have any questions let me know. EC should be getting the Transfer grades any time now. They will not be a Letter grade. but a Pass/Fail or CR. .. anyone know of a online Micro- class ?? let me know
R.

New Mexico junior college and edukan has online micro. They arent expensive either, hope this helps!

Hey Thanks.. yes please contact me.. I have some tips.. that may help.. I still have Micro, Ls-1,2,3, and Transitions and FCCA.. working on LS-1 nest. test on aug 24th.. so I am getting it done..

Do you have to purchase the lab kit that straightline says is mandatory ??????/

If your going to need the lab.. and plan on taking the Lab...YEs you must purchase the lab kit....It cost me 285.00 with shipping and the labs are many but not hard.. just takes about 30 min to 60 min each.. I did all mine in a few days.. it is a straight forward process not hard.. and Straighterline understands your data will different than anyone else .. so there is no correct answer.. but ..you need to be in the ball park.. and many of the Labs are you taking pictures of your stuff and sending them in... big thing is you MUST COMPLETE.... all the labs... email me for more info..

.

I will also email you but you may not need the lab. I am doing it with no lab and it is still accepted by Excelsior. I also know where I am going to do my BSN will acccept it without the lab.

well if you do it without the lab then it isnt enough credit is it?

It is enough credit just not for most RN to BSN programs.

EC just requires A&P-1 and A&P-2 with no lab... but.. .if you want to go on to a BSN you will need the lab.. that what is why I did the Lab.. it was really worth it.. not that bad.. and a good bang for the buck.. or so I thought.. compared to a brick and mortar school..I did both in a month and half.. and I could have done it in a month ..

R.

Depends on what BSN progrm you decide to go to. I am going to be attending Thomas Edison state College and they don't require the lab. My back-up plan school does require the lab but won.tt accept the straighterline courses so it is kind of useless for me to do the lab portion with the course.

Ok sounds like you have a great plan..I just wanted the lab incase I need it. down the line.. yes some school take it and some do not.. Im just keeping this in my hand of academic cards , in case I need it, if not ...well it was fun and not that hard. and I got to see the inside of a fetal pig.. and cow eye and sheep brain,,, fun stuff
R.

just signed up for the straighterline a&p. Hope it works out for me......

How long do you think it would have taken you if you had just taken A&PII but with the lab??

I think based on my the labs for AP-1 I could have done it in a couple of weeks

R.

Thanks for the post. This is the only online A&P that the school I want will take. I can see why -- it has a lot more requirements. Do you need the microscope for the first semester? It only mentions it on the A&P syllabus.

As for the pics of the labs -- I am lousy at downloading though I guess I could get a friends to snap them on his IPhone for me. How detailed do the pictures have to be -- would a plain old point and shoot camera work?

Also, which schools have rejected Straighterline? Are those the same schools that won't take online courses anyway? Is it a problem you get a percentage instead of a letter grade?

Thanks everyone! This course is adding up -- $$$ and I hope it counts.

After completing A&P-1 with lab.. I see no need to get a Microscope.. all the slides are on line as pictures.. and Lab work sheets are just that work sheets.. all you need to do is so a bit of research on line.. and turn them in.. the big take home message .. is... turn something in.. they are not picky about the data.. they know every lab will have some degree of variability .. you get the grade if you turn something in.. that is the grad.... getting it done.. I used a very cheap point and shoot dig camera. sent a picture or two as required and .. .. I got the grade.. the class is pass/ fail for EC.. and the labs are all pass/fail.. you pass if you turn something in. do not worry about precise details.. .. Every school has there own requirements.. as to accepting the credit or not.. I just know EC took it.. and it meets.. national standard for college credits so there are a lot of schools that take it.. but Im sure there are others who do not. you just have to ask the school..

is there a study guide for Essentials of Nursing Care: Health Safety (488)?

yes... once you sign up/ pay for the class. you can down load it from your "My EC" page.. I use the study guide or course out line as a check list.. once I have a understanding of the material on the course outline.. I am ready to test.. the best study method for me is to pay the 75.00 for the Practice test part A and Part B..and take both of them right a way..I really do not care what my score is.. I just want access to the questions and rational's I then tear every question apart looking up every term word or concept.. in both question and answer and rational's I make notes .. I have found that keeps me focused on the course content.. I also use Sanders,s NCLEX REVIEW.. book and notes from study group 101, and I have bought the Med Surg book that is recommended from EC.. so far I have 2 A's 3 B's using this method.. good luck

Congratulations Romstead!!!!!

Romstead: I just started the A&P I with lab at SL. You said in a prior post that we really don't need the microscope -- do you still think that? Because this course has already cost a ton.

I read the chapter and did all the 3 review tests (and even some flashcards) on the book's website (review and comprehension, etc.) Do I need to work the harder problems at the end that are interspersed through the chapter. I want to really learn the material and do well but not make it harder than I need to.

I also don't see much to even turn in -- it seems like the course is go buy the stuff, read it, and take the tests.

Thanks -- you have been VERY helpful.

You don't need a microscope for the class. The CD rom that came in your lab pack (If your taking it with lab) has slides on it.

I never needed a microscope.. the slides are in the CD or and on the lab website. with your lab instructions..

ROB

Personally, I think the Straighterline course is hard because your only grade is the test. I have done really well but I have referred to the book for some of the tricky questions and the drawings -- there is nothing in the instructions about not using the book.

Has anyone had the final? Did you have to proctor? Straighterline SAYS WGU says it has to be proctored -- but no one at WGU will confirm this. Could you use the book?????

Txnewby- the answer to your question for proctoring is "yes" for WGU. You sign up for proctoring when you enroll in SL and your final is proctored via webcam by proctoru. I hope this helps:-)

Hi! I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if you could tell me how long it took you to complete the a&p I or II, or microbiology courses at Straighterline. I am trying to price out how many months I will have to pay the $99 fee for. I was told that some people could finish it within a month, but others take a few months. I would be taking the classes one at a time to try to just focus my energy on one subject at a time. Any input would be appreciated! Thank you so much in advance!

Hi -- good question, but it HAS been a long time. I did this for a lark and in the end realized I would just stay put with what I was doing. I am a perfectionist and did make an A+ in A&P I, and it did take me 4 months -- I could have probably done it faster but I decided I was in no hurry. I had a full time job making good money. If I had been out of work and in need to get it through it quickly, I probably could have done it in a month or two and made a lower grade. The course ran over Christmas, and I decided I could not put my other interests on hold. However, I am probably the exception. After the course, I put it all away (donated the lab kit to my daughter's school) and buckled down to my current job and will probably retire in it. Widen your request and you will probably find many people who got through in a month or so. They do let you use your book for the final and whether it is proctored depends on the nursing school requirements. But if it is proctored and you need the book make sure you have that in writing to show the proctor person. They are very OCD.

Thank you very much for the reply. I am hoping to get A's in the courses as I have been told I will need them to even be considered for the WGU program out here in California. I took Anatomy already and received an A, but have been in a bind trying to get into the Physiology class at a brick and mortar. Unfortunately, straighterline only offers physiology in the a&p package, so I will have to retake anatomy to get the physio component. It is a little frustrating, but I'm hoping that my previous experience with the subject will help me to move a little quicker through the class and still get an A. Thank you so very much for the info.

Hello, I am taking the A&P1, I'm getting ready to take the final, but I'M nervous. Are the questions ones that we have seen before or out the book? ANd pointers would be helpful. Thanks

Has any community colleges accepted A&P I, II and Micro for RN program , there must be so many who only need the Sciences like me to get into the Associates RN program. Please help... Thanks
