Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Forums:

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

well good luck to you Mt.Steel. Im gonna keep pressing forward and hope all is well for me. Im gonna register for 300 on wed.I attempted to do so today but was unable. Im not holding my breath for DARS report before class starts but I can hope.Supposed to be getting financial aid award letter in april so we shall see. I wish all the info you needed was in one place but I find myself still getting a bit turned around with their site. Not all the info is the same for diierent programs. and there is just not ONE DEFINATE place to go and get it. It is frustrating at times and I feel like i waste alot of time just browsing the site for the info i need.Im hoping it will get better or atleast easier. We shall see

I've been lurking. Hi everyone, I'm Tracie. Six classes to go in the Ohio U program. Have question for vets of the program. What do you think about doubling up on Diversity and Health Assessment. I just found a list of course offerings through Summer 2014/2015. I need to either double up or change my schedule this November or my completion will be delayed. Thanks for any input.

The link they gave for it doesn't even work for me, to download it at all. Says the link is not valid. Where are you downloading it from?
I had that problem too, so I googled it, got to this website, and downloaded it from there. Click under "Epic Client Install Directions", then scroll down to the button that says "Download Epic Player"

A friend of mine that is a FNP and used to teach at an online school is looking over the FNP program info for me. I'll let you know her opinion.

I found this thread over the weekend and i must say i love it.Wish i would have found it sooner.I totally plan on applying, certainly not looking forward to the application process and all that waiting. Its nice to see you guys going from beginning through. My only question how is it with a mandatory (B) 80% to pass classes?
If I remember correctly, my regular RN program was the same way. If we got below an 80%, we did not pass the class. This is much the same. The classes I have taken so far have been very generous when grading. No worries yet.

Well that's good to know. I went to their online bookstore. I will definitely check out Amazon in the future. I just purchased the one book for NRSE 300. I don't know when I'll start for sure. I'll shop around for books. Thanks! My book came today...about 2 weeks to arrive.

I agree about getting around OU's website. It took me FOREVER to find things. I'd think I'd know where to go to look up some little tidbit only to find myself in the maze once again. I wish you all the luck in the world. I think I need to go ahead and get my Master's degree for the future. And the cost is amazing. Keep me posted. I hope you get your DARS report soon. I'll be checking!

is this the nutrition book used for nutrition 1000. Do I need to purchase the whole bundle. I could get this book with the study guide from bookrenters.com for a lot less.

Glad to have two OU nursing classes done and under the belt. Wasn't so bad. Put more time in than I expected. But, now that I am in the swing of things...hopefully I can do it in a more timely fashion. Not a fan of "scholarly posts"
Better Become a fan!!! They are in just about every class!!

Anyone know what classes count as Human Growth and Development???? I need one - Thanks This is that last one I need to figure out, then...my ducks are in a very busy row LOL

That's quite a bit different than my experience so far. I have not heard anything at all from OU since I sent my application on 2/21. I e-mailed the the OU "enrollment specialst" who originally contacted me about a week and half ago. Though he responded quickly, what he told me was not encouraging: "Once ALL of your documents have been received, you should receive a confirmation email from main campus letting your know all of your documents are in and you are under academic review."

Since I haven't heard anything, I guess that means they have not gotten all of my documents. Of course the problem is that I have no way of knowing what, if anything is still outstanding. At this stage, I've given up worrying about things - I did not plan to start until summer anyway. I have also applied elsewhere just in case OU continues to be a riddle wrapped in an enigma and as a hedge against an unfavorable DAR.

Maybe your stuff is taking so long because your starting til Summer. I do know there are tons of people getting enrolled at my job. Maybe they figure your not starting til June so " he can wait". Who knows.

michellemybell, are you seeing a grade for the Mod 1 tests? It states if you're not happy with your grade you can take it again...but if the deadline is Mon at midnite when do we see our grade??? Mod 2 assignments will be posted at midnite tonite it appears.
I do not see the grades but according to Pam grades are not posted until Wednesday. I repeated both anyway and glad I did! I was hoping the assignments would be posted earlier....don't know why I would even think that!! This AP writing stuff is so old for me I'm relearning it!! UGH.....

OMG has anyone looked ahead for the assessment class and seen the full assessment that is due. I had no idea we had to get someone to watch us do an absolutely insane assessment. What BSN nurse do you know uses an opthalmascope or an otoscope. We have 3 weeks to get our act together. OH boy am I nervous now!

Does anyone have any information about the RFPD 110 Fashion and Culture Class that was recently added to the Winter list of classes? It looks like this class could be taken instead of the Modern Asia class.

Does anyone out there know if Nutrition will be offered??? I was SO HOPING to take it during the winter season.

Hadn't thought of that but that would seem to be an unusual way of handling admissions. I have to believe that they have all of my documentation. Every thing was requested by 2 March and I have confirmation that all of it was sent. Also, I requested the same transcripts for my application to UT-A more than 2 weeks later. I confirmed today that they already have everything. UT-A says that they will have an evaluation done in about 2 weeks, so it's possible that I will have everything in place there before I hear anything from OU.

Occams Razor: Most likley a combination of what looks like a poor admissions system at OU combined with a lot of applicants.

Thanks and kudos to all of you for your ongoing updates and feedback. I have been contemplating OU for quite some time, then ran across this thread. Think I will move forward with the next step...thanks to all the positive nurses on this site!!

There are issues, I think every program is going to have them. Sometimes I get really frustrated with some of the assignments, or technical issues, but I've talked to people in other BSN programs, online and in class. Seems like they all have their own set of problems. For me, my BSN is a stepping stone to my NP. I didn't feel going into this program it was going to do much for me besides let me take the next step. It seems a lot of people feel like they aren't learning much, but from what I've heard, that is any BSN program out there. Well not any program, because there are some that are way more involved. But a lot of them anyways.

I have another question.. big surprise right, lol. OK, so between them changing to semesters, and me having to take summer part B off for maternity leave, it's making it impossible for me to follow the grid with order of classes. Obviously I start with transitions, which come fall is combined with legal/ethics. So that leaves me having to take legal/ethics for my 2nd class, in spring part B. Then for Summer part A, I can't take any of the classes, because the ones offered are classes that are being combined or the class that has to be taken last.

I figured I would take one of the elective type courses that I will need for Summer part A. Then when I come back for Fall, it is all thrown off again. It's like four 5 week blocks that the classes are not offered in order.

Has anyone else taken the classes out of order? Is it a big deal? Having to take this one block off really throws off the order and when the classes are offered. Plus it changes a little with them switching and combining classes. I only want to do one course a time, since I am pregnant and then will be adjusting to a newborn baby. I also plan on taking stats, as well as some other courses I will probably need through Rio Salado or one of those other schools that do the quicker courses. So I figured I could work on those at the same time as long as I'm handling it ok.

Yes..that is what I understand. It wasn't so bad...as much as a nuisance to me.
But...a good way to keep grades up after crazy tests!

So if we take it twice the computer keeps the higher score, correct? AP is a pain...every detail must be correct.

I got a new DARS report after getting the "final" one back in March. This one is TOTALLY different and requires a TON more classes. I'm not sure why they did a new one when the other one was finalized. If they add a million more classes I don't know...

Where does it say that?? I missed it............It does look like a lot of work though....videos, reading, quizzes......
Let's just pass the course and be done with it!!!!

Can you PM me with the name and ISBN of the text for NRSE 300?
Don't know if the outrageous cost of textbooks is an issue for you but it is for me. One way of saving significant money on books is to buy the previous edition. I've often gotten brand new, unused texts this way for less than the cost of shipping and used for as little as $1. There is usually very little difference between the new edition and the previous version (for that matter, there is usually little difference among almost any of the previous editions). The only downside I've found is that if pages are referenced in the course syllabus, they won't be the same in the older edition and you'll have to hunt a bit.

As far as I know the partners DO NOT get a discount..they might have used too
Can anyone weigh in on this>?
I know they used to a couple of years ago; when I enrolled early last year I was told they no longer did that anymore.

That one asks for the link? It was in the orientation about downloading it as well, so I wonder if that one will work. I'll have to go and look tonight.

michellemybell, are you seeing a grade for the Mod 1 tests? It states if you're not happy with your grade you can take it again...but if the deadline is Mon at midnite when do we see our grade??? Mod 2 assignments will be posted at midnite tonite it appears.
I had the same issue when I took NRSE 300. You won't get to see the official grade until Weds, so you have to take the test for the second time without really knowing what the original grade was. Kind of a silly system but you only get the higher of the 2 grades.

Thanks for the responses. I prefer reading and test taking over paper writing any day of the week. I enjoy going to the brick and mortar campus. However, I just really want to be done. Weighing the costs and time elements Ohio wins over Beth-El at UCCS. I have already applied to Ohio, submitted my transcripts (which I have had to submit some of them twice) and just playing the waiting game. I know you cannot compare RN-BSN since you have likely only done ONE. But just wondered if the experience has been positive overall. Also, I was looking for details on WHAT type of assignments were given. I think you answered that Delta Roxy. I am grateful that you all take the time to post here at all. Greatly appreciated.

I saw the assignments - and I am willing to take ANY grade to pass this - YES, even an 80% and I will be pleased!!! I have crazy schedule coming up and need to pass out!!!

I am also taking the other nursing course scheduled, PLUS Stats --- and then in a few weeks I am starting EN 101. Then after this 5 weeks, I am taking 3 intercession classes LOL - Happy Christmas to me!!!!

I will be done before the semester change!! I WILLLLLL!!!!!!

Sure Chuckster. I'll PM you later this evening when I can access that info for you. I hope you hear something soon.

Well, I'm considering changing horses. I've been talking with Aspen Univ. For about $7150 plus books I can earn an RN-MSN. The program looks intersting and applicable. There are no unrelated course requirements and you get to talk to real people with real answers to your questions. Email responses are very timely and I'm thinking this is the route I will take. No, it's not regionally accredited, but is CCNE accredited. The regional accreditation factor is significant for many people, but not for me. There's an Aspen thread going if anyone wants to take a look. For those interested in a BSN only Aspen does not offer that. I'm looking at the MSN bridge program for ADN graduates. Unless I find something really suspicious I'll likely go for the MSN. I've become quite fatigued by OU's less than prompt responses.
Sorry to hear that we may be loosing you from the OU thread.

I'm also interested in getting my MSN but don't think that the RN-MSN route will work well for me unless it also includes a BSN (most programs don't). I'm hoping that with the BSN, I can finally find a position and get some nursing experience before returning for my MSN. It's very difficult for ADN-RNs to find work in my area because so many of the hospital groups are magnets or seeking magnet status. Along with other non-magnet hospitals, many of the nursing homes have also become more selective and refuse to consider hiring associate degree RNs - at least those with no or limited experience.

I will continue to post about my experience with OU - right now, that's easy since I haven't heard anything from them (2 months and counting).

This website can't hold very many emails!!! I sent you a message

Does anyone know if you need to buy the bundle for nutrition or can you just borrow the book?

Thanks

I had to buy the bundle....it's custom made

I received an admission confirmation email at 1130 this morning. It gave me a PID number and tells me to anticipate more information to follow....

I have finally gotten the URL and username for epic. So for your username you need to place ohio/ followed by your actual username for example

michelemybell...the workspace document is a template where you fill in the blanks. You type in the document itself. The other type of document is a student created document. You create the document in Word or whatever you're using then submit as an attachment.
That's exactly what I thought and I got the answer wrong. The question I had was "a workplace document is one that is created by the student (word, pp) true or false". I just figured it was the opposite of workspace. I've been trying to get a straight answer from the TA on this. I'm not going to let this one go! TX

where does it say that?? i missed it............it does look like a lot of work though....videos, reading, quizzes......
let's just pass the course and be done with it!!!!

hi michelle, i looked in the module 1 resources slides. it looks pretty detailed, but we have 3 weeks to decide how we want to do it.

yep. They should have posted by now.
I called today. They said because it is officially a Fall class, the grades do not even have to be submitted until November 29! Odd because my first summer class posted right away.

I am SO HAPPY I found this post.

I am currently enrolled at OU RN to BSN program. I started in Jan 11. Thus far I've completed Transitions (NRSE 300) and Cultural Diversity NRSE 414.

The ISBN for Nursing 300 is ISBN-13: 978-1-55810-282-8

I am NOT an online learner, so I was a bit nervous about taking classes via this route. However, my home life is quite busy, so it was the best option.

Thus far I have made A's in the 2 classes I've completed. I found Transitions to be a bit challenging, because everything is new and you are really made to focus on why you are going back to school. I LOVED cultural diversity and learned so much in that class.

Currently I am at a cross road. I work part-time so I plan on doubling up on classes. The term that started on Monday, I enrolled in Health Appraisal and Statistics. In Health Appraisal you have the opt out test option via taking a 100 question exam in 2hrs. The directions regarding studying were quite vague, so you were basically told to study everything. Well I took the exam today and got a 75.

I personally know that I could probably do better in this class, if I took it for the 5wks, but not sure if I want to deal with the stress of taking it along with statistics. Statistics is VERY involved and although our instructor was nice enough to give us the lesson plan about 2 weeks in advance, it is beyond time consuming.

Should I be happy with my 75 and walk away from Health Appraisal, or should I attempt to take it with statistics in hopes of making a better grade?

For Spring 2, I plan on taking Family Nursing and Legal/Ethical Issues. How difficult is it taking these 2 classes together.

Thanks for any input.

2 questions... For those of you who took Business communications, is the last week of class work able to be done and completed by midweek? My C-section is scheduled for the 10th, and class ends the 11th. I'm debating on doubling up and taking it with my Intro to Arts course, but just need to make sure I can complete my work by Wednesday or Thursday that week. I can email the instructor to be sure, but figured I'd ask here first.

Also, I got the email saying when I can register for Fall. But the courses are not posted yet. When do they usually put those up?

Is this Prof F's class? If so - the answer is yes, it can be completed early. Have no idea about Prof P's class. Prof F - seems like a lot of work at first glance but is very doable - weekly articles to read and write a memo about and then 3 "large" projects that span over several weeks.

I have finally gotten the URL and username for epic. So for your username you need to place ohio/ followed by your actual username for example

Where are you going to download epic from? Because my link doesn't work.

Yes..that is what I understand. It wasn't so bad...as much as a nuisance to me.
But...a good way to keep grades up after crazy tests!
I'd take a discussion board ANY day over a quiz or exam....they are the death of me. I stress out so much before I hit the start button....then the mind goes BLANK!

Never heard of a workplace document...sounds like a bit of a trick question. Let me know what you hear. I noticed my grades have changed a little since first graded. All good though! Maybe yours will change as well.

Went from having to do NO discussions in strategic planning to having to do 8 in health intervention....Apparently the content in this class overlaps w/community nursing, so that will be a good thing.
I saw that too! Strategic Planning was a breath of fresh air for me. The overlap will definitely be a plus for this course. However, amount of discussions seem a little excessive though. I guess I will wait and see how this pans out. I had this professor in Gerontology and she is a bit hard with grading. We have to make sure that we follow her instructions specifically and be very detailed. Hope that I will have a better experience with her this time.

I'd take the pass and walk! But of course that is a personal decision. Are you trying to make straight A's? The stress of Stats would be enough by itself I think. I don't know how you could begin to study for a test like that?! Does it cost the same to take the test as it does to take the course? I'm to start sometime in the coming months. Opted out of starting yesterday but kinda wish I had. Keep us posted on your decision. Do you like the program and format thus far?

I think it was a CRAZY trick question lol. The grades changed because one of the questions did not reflect the policy change on grading. How lucky is that!! But that still has me at that B which sucks.

Has everyone gotten their grades from the session that closed last Sat? I don't mean the course numeric grade in EPIC, I mean the actual, official class grade posted on the "Academics" tab you access through MyOhio.

As you can tell from my question, my grade is not yet available. In response to my query, the TA tells me that "there is usually a delay" in getting the posting of course grades (it was pretty obvious that she was a bit peeved at my question). While the delay is not really a big deal, I don't recall this being the case in the previous course.

There usually is a one week delay from last day of class. I expect to see grades posted as of Monday or Tuesday, October 17-18.

Does anyone out there know if Nutrition will be offered??? I was SO HOPING to take it during the winter season.
On the 10 week nursing class option. I think they changed the "prefix" or something. Pick nutrition as your search criteria. NUTR 128 is listed.

I'd take the pass and walk! But of course that is a personal decision. Are you trying to make straight A's? The stress of Stats would be enough by itself I think. An 80 would have made this decision so much easier. I slacked off my first go round at college, so I think I have a personal goal of a least a 3.5 this go round. Think I'll now put all of my attention into Stats to ensure an A. I still have to get grades in 10 more classes, so I'll be positive that my goal is still attainable. I also see graduate school in my future, so I don't want my GPA to be a hinderance.

About 40 of my questions were able the eyes and ears. I mean, who REALLY focuses on those body parts. I'm sure the bulk of what I missed were from those areas. Opting out and taking the class were the same price, so it's really to your advantage to take the test to see how you do.

I really like the program. I also have several coworkers in the program, so peer support has been amazing.

My Blackboard shows two old Epic classes. Makes me nervous. It doesn't show the class I'm due to start Monday.

There is no order. You have to take 300 first and 455 last. Otherwise you take them as they come. Also, they have changed the policy. You can now take 300 and 455 with another nursing class. I just finished 300 and 330 (family nursing). I am now in 410. So, do not worry about order!!!!

Well, the good news is there's time to pull it up grades. I was hoping APA #2 would be graded before we turned in #3 but alas, it's not to happen. I have moved on to Module 3...gotta stay up on this stuff!
